The wearable technology revolution is here! Smartwatches are now everywhere and are poised to be the device that strikes the perfect balance between fitness tracker and smartphone. And while you may think you don't need another screen in your life, it's worth reconsidering, because the right smartwatch can help you reduce your overall daily screen time by streamlining the key information you need.

Smartwatches come in all shapes, sizes and colors – and are often designed to add functionality to specific smartphones. For example, most smartwatches are designed for use with Android devices, and the Apple Watch works best with iOS devices, although many smartwatches (like Garmin's extensive product line) are agnostic and compatible with any mobile device.

Whether you want to track key health metrics, conveniently communicate with friends and colleagues, or extend your smartphone's battery life by redirecting your most important notifications to your wrist, smartwatches are the best way to do it.

The Apple Watch is our favorite for iPhone owners, but the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 is a great wearable for anyone on Android. We also like a few other options – in different styles and with different levels of cleverness. Below is a roundup of the best smartwatches we've tested.

Best for iPhone Owners

We expect Apple to announce a new Apple Watch very soon, so you'd better wait to buy a new one. That doesn't change the fact that the Apple Watch is the best smartwatch money can buy. It has the best WatchOS operating system, which is slick, with lots of apps to help reduce the number of times you pull out your phone. The 7 Series (8/10, wirelay Recommends) introduced a bigger and brighter screen, faster charging, improved water and dust resistance, and the ability to automatically detect when you've mounted the ebike so it can properly log that activity. The larger screen means you can use the full-screen keyboard to write short messages with a swipe.

The health properties are robust. There's a blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) sensor—useful for athletes training at altitude or anyone with an underlying medical condition—as well as an FDA-approved electrocardiogram sensor. You'll be happy to hear that there are some cool operating features coming to WatchOS9 later this year. Unfortunately, battery life is still average; you'll need to charge it at night (before bed) if you want to track your sleep, especially if you've been using the watch to track your workouts during the day.

Samsung Galaxy Watch5 and Galaxy Watch5 Pro

The Samsung Galaxy Watch5 and Watch5 Pro (7/10, WIRELAY Recommends) are easily the best smartwatches for anyone using an Android phone, especially if you have a Samsung. They match the accuracy of the Apple Watch in several health and fitness metrics, from SpO2, sleep and heart rate monitoring to electrocardiogram measurements (although the latter is exclusive to Samsung phones). The Watch5 Pro is larger and therefore has a battery that lasts about two full days, while the Watch5 lasts about a day and a morning. The Pro also adds GPX, meaning you can easily download hiking routes to your watch. They have sapphire glass to protect the screen, but the Watch5 Pro glass is even more durable and has a stronger titanium case than the standard aluminum Watch5.

They're comfortable to wear, look attractive and boast a sleek interface, although the Wear OS Google Play Store still doesn't have nearly as many apps as Apple's App Store. Still, you can respond to notifications, rely on these devices for turn-by-turn navigation on Google Maps, and ask Google Assistant anything — and rival the Apple Watch in utility.
